I have all my stuff on an external drive also and I had the same issues. Plugged the drive into another puter and it opened everything up fine. Scared the hell out of me though.

Stop looking for recognition and you will end up getting more recognition than you know what to do with.

Computers suck. And this is coming from someone who lives in front of his. Do not start from scratch, you learning curve is built on where you've been just as much as where you want to go.

I agree with UncleM, try plugging into another machine and see if it helps. If not, you may try looking into a vendor who salvages data from drives. Shop around, there are lots of them and prices vary.

holy crap, that REALLY sucks (experienced a lot of that at work, the thing is you shouldn't rely way too heavily on external drives)

though, it might work if you could somehow change the parts that connect the drive to the computer, i.e. the USB sockets, or connect it to the computer via alternate means, if you manage to take the drive from the casing and find a SATA slot in there

Ooooh, those externals can be tricky every now and then.

I had a recent trouble with an external drive, which I had some trouble extracting any essential data from, and it really pays to have multiple burned copies of your work, raws and finished.

As for the starting over thing, it is rather inconvenient, but it has it's advantages.
